The Foundation’s Title Partner is Rolex, a long-standing supporter of the Foundation’s programmes, such as the Science Gateway and Sparks.In a quiet suburb of Geneva, the building blocks of the universe are being unlocked by CERN using particle detectors and accelerators, including the world’s largest accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, which sits in a 27 kilometre underground tunnel.The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss is a wristwatch model introduced by Rolex in 1956 with model number 6541. The Milgauss was advertised as “designed to meet the demands of the scientific community working around electromagnetic fields”.
Rolex's patented new hairsprings made of a niobium-zirconium alloy have improved isochronism performance by 20 to 30 percent, ensuring precision consistency over the entire power reserve duration of the watch (Rolex 2018 Annual Report). Rolex introduced the Milgauss in 1954-55 as the scientist's watch, able to resist magnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss (mil- from the French mille, or thousand). Soon, it'd become known for being worn by scientists at Rolex's Geneva neighbor, CERN.
A normal watch movement can withstand to 70-90 Gauss whereas the Milgauss keeps its incredible precision in a magnetic field up to 1000 Gauss. Rolex had made some of these Milgauss reference 1019s for CERN and these feature a non-luminous dial and hands, like the current example.Rolex’s solution was the Milgauss — the first watch of its kind. Hence the name of the watch, mille being French for thousand. The Milgauss became known notably as the watch worn by scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.By 1988, Rolex admitted defeat and discontinued the Milgauss completely.
